Minimum Wage: Labour Demands Speedy Implementation By NASS

  • Minimum Wage: Labour Demands Speedy Implementation By NASS

The organised labour on Wednesday called for an undelayed implementation of the minimum wage by the National Assembly.

Speaking on this, Mr Joe Ajaero, the President, United Labour Congress (ULC), said the organised labour looks forward to an undelayed implementation of the N30,000 new minimum wage by the National Assembly.

The organised labour of the federation had earlier on Tuesday, suspended an impending strike action which was scheduled as a result of the non-implementation of its demanded N30,000 minimum wage.

The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, after receiving the report from the tripartite committee, promised to hand over the minimum wage report to the National Assembly.

”We believe that money should not be a problem. If Appropriation Bill can be made on certain matters, minimum wage should also receive such attention”. The President, ULC said.

He further advised Nigerians not to relent in their faith in the struggle; as no positive change would be achieved without the organised Labour’s efforts.

The new minimum wage, when signed into law, would be the fifth in the country.

The first was N125; in 1981, Ñ250; in 1989, N3,000; in 1990, N7,500; in 2001 and N18,000; approved by former President Goodluck Jonathan, in 2011.
