- Finally, Buhari Approves N30,000 as New National Minimum Wage
President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday approved the new national minimum wage agreed by the Tripartite Committee on Monday.
The committee agreed on N30,000 as the new national minimum wage and submitted a report to the president through the committee’s chairman, Amal Pepple.
The president has now endorsed N30,000 as the new national minimum wage and promised to send a bill to the National Assembly to effect the final change from N18,000 to N30,000.
This should put to rest the scheduled industrial action by the organised labour following the disagreement over what should be an appropriate minimum wage.
It should be recalled that the Federal Government had insisted on N24,000, citing financial challenges and limited resources to pay the N30,000 agreed by the committee — comprising of government, the private sector, governors and labour representatives.
However, the labour insistence on nationwide strike forced the Federal Government to finally endorsed the agreed amount.
