Fuel Scarcity Pressure Heightens As NUPENG Pledge Support For NLC

  • Fuel Scarcity Pressure Heightens As NUPENG Pledge Support For NLC

As the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) sets to embark on a proposed strike action, the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers (NUPENG) have pledged its support to join forces with Labour in ensuring their demand of a N30,000 minimum wage is met.

The NUPENG National President, Mr Prince  Akporeha, made known in a correspondence that the NUPENG is an affiliate of the NLC, and will, therefore, follow the country’s organised labour body in whatever action it deems fit.

“Are we not an affiliate of the NLC? Is NUPENG on its own? Of course we are with the NLC”. The NUPENG President remarked.

However, the Federal Government had earlier on Friday obtained a court order from the National Industrial court, in an effort to prevent the Nigeria Labour Congress from going on strike.

All endeavours to verify the stance of the Union as regards to the court order obtained by the Federal Government proved abortive, as Mr Ayuba Wabba, the NLC President; the TUC President, Mr Bobboi Kaigama and also the PENGASSA President, Mr Francis Johnson did not respond to their calls.

The NLC, TUC and ULC however, said that they have not been issued any court order, and will therefore go ahead with the strike action as scheduled.

As earlier reported, the NLC remarked that any attempt to stop its action without meeting its demand is an exercise against the labour law and international best practices.

As the proposed Labour strike action which is to start tomorrow, November, 6, 2018, causes panic, especially with the joined forces of its affiliate NUPENG and PENGASSA, the scarcity of petrol is feared.

Nonetheless, the NNPC Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs, Mr Ndu Ughamadu said that the NNPC will do all it could to ensure an availability of petroleum products nationwide. if the strike action is embarked upon.

Mr Ndu Ughamadu further advised motorists, not to dive headlong into panic buying, but be at rest that petrol will be made available.
