Nigeria’s Livestock Industry Under Explored
- Nigeria’s Livestock Industry Under-Explored
The Federal Government can generate millions of naira from the livestock industry if efforts are made to address lingering farmers/herdsmen crisis, the Chief Executive, TVC Nigeria, Mr Andrew Hanlon, has said.
Addressing the National Conflict Resolution Summit organised by TVC and The Nation in Abuja yesterday, Hanlon maintained that Nigeria is missing out on jobs and other economic benefits if urgent action is not taken to resolve the crisis.
He observed that with the crisis, the livestock industry has not been able to build a capacity to position itself in the international market place and generate foreign exchange.
Hanlon said peace will provide an important stimulus to grow the livestock industry in Nigeria, adding that successful conflict resolution will see increased flock and larger herd to take advantage of strong cattle returns .
Citing the case of Ireland where he comes from, Hanlon said beef is a major export providing revenue in excess of 140 million Euros annually.
According to him, the growth of its beef exports is linked to strong demand for its cattle.
Urging Nigeria to take a cue from the Irish sector, Hanlon called on the government to focus on developing the industry and increasing diary export.
International livestock consultant, Kola Kuku, said the industry had great potentials if ranches are created to boost production.
He said it was important to build ranches which will support robust and relevant cattle production techniques.
According to him, a functional and effective livestock development plan is crucial to maintaining access to existing markets, securing new ones and suppoi sustainable production.
