The Lagos State Government on Monday said it was ready to commence the auditing of gas plants across the state in order to rid the state of illegal energy facilities for the safety of lives and property.

The state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Rotimi Ogunleye, said this after visiting the scene of the gas plant explosion on CMD Road, Ikosi area of the state.

He said the Lagos State Building Control Agency had sealed off the gas plant premises while investigation had commenced to ascertain the cause of the incident.

“Most importantly, machineries have been set up by the state government to audit all gas plants in the state in order to stamp out illegal ones. All illegal gas plants in Lagos State will be shut down.

“We observe that quite a number of Lagosians circumvent the established building laws and regulations. Most operators obtain clearance from Department of Petroleum Resources and immediately start business without deeming it fit to obtain requisite permit from Lagos State,” Ogunleye wa s quoted in a statement.

The commissioner advised prospective investors to seek planning information from the ministry to know if such project could be sited in the designated area and thereafter, obtain approval from Lagos State Physical Permit Authority to ensure that the site meet safety standards.
