About 2,000 indigenes of communities in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State have benefited from the ongoing medical programme provided by Green Energy International Limited, the operator of the Otakikpo marginal field in OML 11.

The medical consultant for the programme, Christopher Obiorah, said the exercise, which was supported by Lekoil Oil and Gas Investment, offered free medical diagnosis and examination, eye treatment and distribution of glasses, dental treatment, deworming of children, as well as surgery for critical ailments.

He stated that drugs and insecticide treated mosquito nets were given to beneficiaries, while food items were provided for residents in the various communities.

Obiorah, in a statement from the oil firm, listed communities that benefitted from the programme as Ikuru, Ayama Ekede, Ugama Ekede, Asuama, Asu Oyet and neighbouring villages in the Andoni Local Government Area.

He said the surgeries were successful with few referrals of emergency cases to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.

The Director, Sustainable Development, Green Energy, Ayo Olojede, said the annual medical programme commenced in 2015, adding that it would be sustained as part of the firm’s corporate social responsibility.

He said that the firm commenced production from its two oil wells in February 2017, adding that Green Energy considered the medical outreach as a critical programme that would improve the socio-economic development of the host communities.

The Okanma of Ikuru, Aaron Ikuru, commended Green Energy for investing in the well-being and development of his people.
