Ambode Promises to Protect Consumers’ Rights

  • Ambode Promises to Protect Consumers’ Rights

The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Wednesday inaugurated the board of Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, with a pledge that the government would ensure that consumers in the state get value for money spent on goods and services.

Ambode, at the inauguration of the board chaired by consumer rights advocate and lawyer, Mrs. Olufunmilola Falana, in the Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja, said effort would be made to end the daily reported cases of violation of consumers’ rights in the state.

He said, “The establishment of the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency is a strong demonstration of our commitment to the protection of the rights of consumers, the promotion of consumer satisfaction and our resolve to ensure that they get value for money spent on goods and services.

“The need for the agency has become more imperative in view of the fact that Lagos State, with its huge population, provides the largest commercial market in Sub-Sahara Africa, with the highest reported cases of daily infractions on rights of consumers.

“The agency is also meant to complement our reforms on the ease of doing business in the state.”

The governor said members of the board were carefully selected from private and public sectors based on their impeccable character, remarkable track records, experience on the subject matter and passion for the job.

Ambode urged members of the board to hit the ground running, asking them to nurture the new agency to become an institution that would guarantee timely delivery of effective services to aggrieved consumers.

Aside from Falana, other members of the board are Olugbode Ajoke (General Manager), Mrs. Sola Ajulo, Mr. Femi Awogbami, Mrs. Toki Mabogunje, Dr Monsurat Adeleke, Mrs. Adejoke Oladipupo, Mr. Alayande Olanrewaju, Mrs. Faderera Lekan-Rotimi, Mr. Segun Kuti-George, Mrs. Mosunmola Samuel and Mr. Oduyebo Jacobs, who is to serve as the secretary.

Falana assured Ambode that the board members would work in the best interest of consumers in the state.

Ambode also swore in a new Permanent Secretary, Mr. Tunde Ogundeko, who is to resume work at the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission.
