The President/Chairman of Council, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, Mr. Cyril Ede, says the institute is committed to carrying out relevant programmes aimed at educating members of the public on payment of taxes.

According to Ede, taxes are crucial to revenue mobilisation efforts of the government and the media are a vital partner in achieving the goal of raising substantial revenue to enhance economic growth.

The CITN president, who was represented by a member of the Executive Committee of the council, Olushola Agbeluyi, spoke during his keynote address at a workshop organised by the institute for financial and taxation journalists.

The capacity building, which focused on adequate reporting of taxation for the purpose of public enlightenment, was facilitated by tax experts.

Ede said tax was not meant to be punitive, saying, “The programme is geared towards building capacity of media officers charged with reporting on tax issues.”
