U.K. lawmakers have voted in favor of holding a snap election on June 8.

The decision followed a debate in the House of Commons and comes a day after Prime Minister Theresa May unexpectedly called for an early election. The move by the U.K. leader is widely seen as a bid to strengthen the government’s hand both domestically and in Brexit negotiations with the EU. A total of 522 lawmakers voted for the motion and 13 voted against it.
