FG Collaborates With Trawler Owners on Fishing Terminal

The Federal Ministry of Transportation and the Nigerian Trawler Owners Association have intensified plans for the establishment of a world-class fishing terminal in Lagos.

A former President of NITOA, Mrs. Margaret Orakwusi, was quoted in a report to have said that the plan for a fishing terminal had got a brighter chance in spite of the concession of the area originally dedicated for it.

Orakwusi ascribed the project’s new outlook to the interest expressed by the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, who had a guided tour of the Kirikiri Phase Two, where the fishing terminal would be situated.

She said, “It will interest anybody to know that this is the very first time that a minister, and again, a minister of transport, not of agric, will take so much interest in the development of the industrial fishing activities in the country to the point that he is desirous of having a fishing terminal.

“Some areas, or all the areas have been conceded, but he believes that a fishing terminal of international standard must serve the industry.”

Orakwusi, who led the delegation of NITOA members while the minister toured the proposed area for the terminal, said Amaechi was working out the provision for the project to still be in Kirikiri.

She said, “The minister is making the provision; it is just to work out the modalities. The ministry is working with the stakeholders. So, at the end of the day, whatever happens there, everybody would have been carried along.”
