A Danish shipping company said on Tuesday that a container vessel it has chartered has been attacked off the coast of Nigeria, and 11 crew members were missing.

Maersk Line said it could “confirm, that the charter vessel Pomerenia Sky, which is managed and operated by the company Midocean Limited, has been attacked while approaching Onne, Nigeria.”

The attack took place on Sunday, the emailed statement to dpa read.

In a separate statement, IoM said nine other crew members were reported safe and the vessel had proceeded to safe waters.

There was no information concerning the nationalities of the crew.

Maersk said it was cooperating with Midocean.

The vessel is registered in Liberia, and owned by Germany company Doehle Group.

MV Pomerenia Sky was built in 2007 in Yangzijiang, China.

Maritime piracy and armed robbery remain a threat to shipping in the Gulf of Guinea, said the International Maritime Bureau, a global anti-piracy watch group said.
